Nick ZwarDeltakerVery interesting how Alex North incorporated some of the material for his unused score for 2001 -A Space Odyssey for the totally different in tone The Shoes of the Fisherman, yet both musical applications seem perfectly valid.
One of all time favorite film composers.
Nick ZwarDeltakerBut 1.8 MILLION posts…..that’s quite the haul to transfer.
Yeah, that’s quite a number… and lots of threads. I suppose that’s why they did not bother to implement 301 redirects for the forum. Pity, because that means the Google search won’t register the new threads… at least for a while. But perhaps the new board search will function much better.

Nick ZwarDeltakerIt’s definitely not fully operational yet; the Beta version ran considerably smoother.
Nick ZwarDeltakerIs that the right direction? Not sure anymore.
The photo does not really tell the direction, does it?
😀
Well, only one direction is the “correct” direction of the pic… not sure though which it is.Now listening to…

Nick ZwarDeltakerYes, the functionality of this forum is quite good. The FSM forum is over two decades old, so it shows its age. I guess the biggest challenge in the FSM forum relaunch is not so much the forum functionality per se, but the transfer of all posts and associated users.
Nick ZwarDeltakerYou should be able to see that on your profile page. I cannot access either board (old or new) since today, so I can’t check.
Nick ZwarDeltakerCheers!
Nick ZwarDeltakerAs far as I can see, they really transferred the board; it looks like the existing threads are all there. The Beta-Tester Board has been dismantled, it’s looking good so far. They had all the threads in both boards for a while, with a beta-testing board that didn’t show in the old board. I hope everything will go smoothly.
It’s certainly a board with more options than the old one.
Nick ZwarDeltakerWhat? What happened? You must not leave FSM, Thor. It’s not an option and probably prohibited by law. You’ve been around for too long. Your FSM membership’s legal status has been set to “permanent”. So you see, there is no way out.
Anyway, it just won’t be the same without you. I can understand Sabbaticals, though. I once took one that lasted fiver years. But never say never.
Nick ZwarDeltakerYes, I agree. It does feel a bit odd. We live in a quiet neighborhood, so it’s sort of ok, but still… I wouldn’t want to go around with my kids begging for candy… it’s just no real tradition here.
On the other hand, I do love to carve a good ol’ jack-o-lantern every few years. I remember in 2021, I carved a big pumpkin and prepared our house entrance a bit (with speakers hidden in the plants) and pre-recorded “dialog” options I could click and play (such as “Who goes there?” “What do you desire?” “Silence!”, “Don’t move near the candy claw”, “yes/no” etc.). I did that so I could distort and warp the dialog to sound quite spooky and place it among small speakers in the pants in front of our house. I then eventually opened the door in a faceless costume and handed out some candy. It was neat for the small kids, and they didn’t expect that.
However, the following year, I didn’t feel like it at all, so we darkened our house and just weren’t officially home.
Nick ZwarDeltakerWell, I was among the Beta-testers for the forum, so I know a bit how it will turn out, though I’m looking forward to see how it will work and look when it is out in the wild.
Nick ZwarDeltakerWell, just like the movies, the Roy Webb CAT PEOPLE and the Moroder CAT PEOPLE are totally different worlds. I remember when I started to collect film scores, the Moroder score for CAT PEOPLE was everywhere… record shops were plastered with that thing.
I like both (that David Bowie song is really cool), though I listen to them at completely different occasions. However, the Webb score is the more interesting one to me. 🙂
Nick ZwarDeltakerI didn’t know Jonathan Elias wrote that much library music… I will certainly look (or better hear) into that.
Nick ZwarDeltakerThere is the wonderful “Dimensioni Sonore” (Sound Dimensions) by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, which covers a wide range of moods in many self contained pieces. Really good stuff. As noted, library music tends to be more like an “etude”, usually they are self contained miniature compositions rather than developed scores, so listening to this stuff is like eating Potatoes chips… you can have one or two or three or a whole bag. 🙂
Composing library music allows the composer to explore ideas or techniques in short form, without having to conform and commit the material to a larger scale composition. -
