Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterSame for me, probably around 20+ years ago. Already on the C64 or Amiga I was probably the only person who listened to the music instead of really playing the games 😉 Classics like the still active Chris Huelsbeck, Rob Hubbard and the like (if anyone remembers those…)
But I also listen to them often. Classic but also newer ones. I like Olivier Deriviere oder Austin Wintory a lot.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI did as well.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI did see two if I remember right. Pirates of the Caribeann and a few years ago Star Wars. The 2nd indeed lacked a bit thte same acoustic venue issue but nevertheless it was nice.
Probably not fitting but I did see some silent movie with live music as well which I prefer.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterTo me it’s probably The Mummy. Even though, I found L.A. Confidential great, too.
Yes, those and other scores like City Hall, The Shadow or even the rather unusal Fierce Creatures are some of later scores I like, too. But they all miss the “edgyness” especially in action stuff of his earlier works.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterJerry Goldsmith
John Williams
Ennio Morricone
Miklos Rozsa
Bernhard Herrmann
Elliot Goldenthal
Lalo Schifrin
John Barry
Christopher Young
Dimitri TiomkinIt’s just an attempt annd hard to limit it. The positions after 3rd are more or less random…
And that was the reason for my high Goldsmith ranking. Yes, he wrote great scores. But I am not a huge fan of his 80s and 90s super reverb synth heavy sound.
I generally like Goldsmith best until mid-80s. The 80s synths can really be hit and miss. TOTAL RECALL is to me the last really great score. There are some good ones in the 90s but they pale against the others for me, too.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterENTER THE DRAGON is a must, but only in later expanded and remastered editions, as the original album contained inserted yells and “Kung Fu vocals”.
Yes, not on all tracks but right on the main and I think end title.
Don’t have that Schifrin box as I had most already in some form.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterOh, there are lots of them. Bullit is an all time favorite of his, especially on the FSM with the original score and the also great album re-recording. The other re-recording by Schifrin is nice but misses the feeling. I feel similar with Mannix.
Some others, especially those 70s groovy ones
– Enter The Dragon
– Rush Hour
– The Liquidator (Great “Bond song” 😉
– Dirty Harry
– Magnum Force
– Joe Kidd
– Coogan’s Bluff
– The Concord – Airport 79
– The Hellstrom Chronicle (very experimental)
– Amityville Horror
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterYes, the sounds make sense in general. I just found it didn’t leave enough room for breathing. It was all just loud in the first movie.
Besides that I like both movies a lot (actually I do like Lynch’s version, too), although I didn’t buy the character development in the 2nd, too rushed.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI like Morricone’s as well but it is just more challanging as Goldsmith’s to me. I have a some special connection to Stockhausen’s KONTAKTE as I proof-read a doctoral thesis of a friend some years ago (for typos, not really the content ;-)).
Also I can even find noises interesting as overlaying noise e.g. from machines (put your ear on your fridge while it is working) can create dissantant rhythmic sounds.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterBottom line of the thread so far: Non one knows anything for sure 😉
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterIt might be VAT taxes. If you do business with private persons on other countries you cannot use reverse charge applicable for businesses but sometimes have to register for VAT in that country. For EU countries there is a way to register in your local tax authorities but it is really bureaucratic overhead already. Might be more complicated in other countries. For that reason I as a freelancer I refuse to work for private persons outside Germany.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI feel similar. Morricone seems rather hard to listen to. Much more edgy that the others. Maybe partly because it seems more chamber music like and often maybe also rather improvised?
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI am also no super fan but like quite a lot by him. I have no real order but EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMANS (also love the movie), MIDNIGHT RUN and BEETLEJUICE are on the list. And a bunch of his TV themes like SIMPSONS, THE FLASH and TALES FROM THE CRYPT maybe. Probably also BATMAN as I think that was the score I got aware of him.
His newer output in scores often leaves me rather cold. But the concert I know so far works are indeed great.
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterI indeed have less than I wanted ;): The same Star Wars and Indy Boxes and the Charles Gerhardt Box a few years ago. Not sure if those count as boxes already but I have a 3CD Laurie Johnson with THE PROFESSIONALS (jewel cases but in a paperbox) and a the pre-FSM box BEN-HUR 2CD Edition (same format as teh SW and Delerue, how that is called escapes me right now…).
Malte MüllerNøkkelmesterPart 2 was a bit better or better spotted. But in part 1 I often wished the music wouldn’t overpower everything for example in rather calm desert scenes.
